A substantive expert meeting took place at the CASPIA Analytical Center, bringing together scientists, media representatives, and members of the analytical community.
The central figure of the discussion was Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor, and Full Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, Adil Garibov.
The main focus was on two closely interrelated topics: the current situation surrounding Iran’s nuclear program and the risks posed to Azerbaijan and the entire region by the ongoing escalation of the armed conflict in Iran.
Professor Garibov described the regional situation as tense and alarming. At the same time, he expressed the view that, despite all the threats, the United States is unlikely to decide on a direct strike against Iranian nuclear facilities. According to him, such actions carry enormous risks of radioactive contamination, an environmental catastrophe, and uncontrolled escalation that would affect not only Iran but also neighboring countries.
A special place in the discussion was given to the potential for developing its own nuclear energy sector in Azerbaijan. The expert recalled that significant uranium occurrences and deposits were identified on the territory of the republic back in Soviet times. However, their effective utilization requires the creation of a full-fledged infrastructure, the training of highly qualified national personnel, the formation of a modern regulatory and legal framework in line with IAEA standards, and the engagement of reliable international partners while strictly adhering to the non-proliferation regime. Only such a comprehensive and systematic approach will enable Azerbaijan, in the long term, to lay the foundations for a peaceful nuclear industry and significantly enhance its energy independence.
The experts also drew attention to the situation in Armenia, where the process of extending the service life and modernizing the existing Metsamor nuclear power plant is currently actively underway, alongside preparations for the construction of new power units.
In conclusion, the participants emphasized that the current regional instability makes issues of energy diversification and scientific-technological sovereignty particularly relevant. The discussion once again confirmed that Azerbaijan possesses all the necessary prerequisites for the confident and safe development of a peaceful nuclear program, provided there is consistent political will and systematic funding.
