Nargiz Mammadova, an expert at the "CASPIA Analytical Center", commented for Anewz on Azerbaijan's evolving energy agenda, highlighting the country's strategic focus on renewable energy development and the expansion of regional energy connectivity.

According to the expert, the development of renewable energy and the export of green electricity have become key priorities of Azerbaijan's long-term energy strategy.

"First, expanding renewable energy provides Azerbaijan with a new impetus for diversifying its energy sector. Second, the export of renewable electricity strengthens the country's position as a regional energy hub connecting the South Caucasus, Central Asia, and Europe," Mammadova noted.

As an example, she referred to the trilateral agreement between Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan on establishing a Green Energy Corridor, as well as the joint initiative of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania, and Hungary under the "Green Energy Corridor (GECO)" project. The project envisages the construction of a submarine electricity cable beneath the Black Sea, enabling the transmission of up to "4,000 MW" of renewable electricity to European markets.

However, Mammadova stressed that Azerbaijan's strategic ambitions extend beyond renewable energy exports alone.

"Azerbaijan is gradually emerging not only as a regional energy hub but also as a broader connectivity hub. This includes both electricity transmission and digital infrastructure. A notable example is the construction of the Trans-Caspian fiber-optic cable linking Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan, while a similar digital connection is planned across the Black Sea. As these projects develop, Azerbaijan will become a key junction connecting energy and digital corridors between Central Asia and Europe," she concluded.
