During the program “Current Affairs Today” (Aktualno Segodnya) on CBC TV Azerbaijan, Director of the CASPIA Center Orkhan Yolchuyev discussed the evolving geopolitical dynamics in the Middle East and their implications for Azerbaijan.
According to Yolchuyev, Azerbaijan’s response to regional crises is largely shaped by a strategy of soft power, where humanitarian engagement serves as a key instrument of foreign policy. He noted that over the past years Azerbaijan has consistently provided humanitarian assistance in regions affected by conflict and instability.
“Humanitarian aid has become one of the important elements of Azerbaijan’s soft power,” Yolchuyev explained. “At the same time, Azerbaijan cannot remain indifferent to developments occurring near its borders, particularly in regions where millions of our compatriots live.”
He emphasized that Azerbaijan’s approach is also guided by the principle repeatedly articulated by Ilham Aliyev that Azerbaijan represents a homeland for Azerbaijanis living across the world. In this regard, Yolchuyev noted that ethnic Azerbaijanis residing in neighboring countries maintain a strong connection to their historical homeland, which can provide support during times of crisis.
Yolchuyev also highlighted Azerbaijan’s humanitarian engagement in several international crises. He referred to the country’s humanitarian and financial assistance to the population of Gaza, as well as the tens of millions of dollars in humanitarian aid provided to Ukraine.
“In essence, the policy line that Azerbaijan is pursuing today, including in relation to Iran, is aimed primarily at preserving stability and security in the region,” he stated. “Our goal is to help reduce tensions wherever possible.”
According to Yolchuyev, this diplomatic approach reflects the behavior of a middle power, where humanitarian initiatives and pragmatic diplomacy are used to mitigate geopolitical tensions. Over the past year, he added, Azerbaijan has also attempted to play a stabilizing role in the region by supporting dialogue and minimizing potential risks.
At the same time, Yolchuyev noted that Azerbaijan’s foreign policy is based on a multivector and pragmatic approach. Maintaining constructive relations with neighboring countries remains a priority, followed by broader engagement with global actors.
“Azerbaijan seeks to build pragmatic relations with all countries,” he said. “Even in complex cases, dialogue remains possible. It is important to recall that Azerbaijan itself was the first to propose a peace initiative to Armenia. Such initiatives are embedded in our national strategy.”
According to the CASPIA Center director, Azerbaijan’s diplomatic posture reflects a broader effort to balance regional stability, humanitarian engagement, and constructive international cooperation in an increasingly complex geopolitical environment.
